On-Site Metal Stitching for Mining & Industry
Cracked castings on mining and industrial plant, repaired where they stand. Cold metal stitching needs no heat and no open flame, so we can repair crusher frames, mill housings, pump casings and machine beds in position — without stripping the machine down or trucking it to a workshop. Based in Durban since 1977, serving mines and plants in KwaZulu-Natal and across South Africa.
Why repair on site
- Less downtime. No dismantling, crating and transport of heavy castings, and no wait for a replacement part to be made or imported.
- No heat, no distortion. Welding a large cast iron housing in position risks new cracks and warping. Metal stitching is a cold mechanical repair.
- Safer where heat is a hazard. No open flame, high temperatures or welding sparks — suited to plant areas where hot work is a problem.
- Permanent, not a patch. A correctly stitched repair carries its service load for the working life of the casting.
What we repair on site
- Crusher and mill components — frames, jaw stocks, housings
- Machine beds and press frames
- Pump and compressor casings and end covers
- Gearbox and transmission housings
- Large diesel and marine engine castings — blocks, heads, bedplates
- Obsolete castings where no replacement part exists
How an on-site job works
- Send us the details. Photos of the crack, rough dimensions and where the machine is. WhatsApp 084 511 5929 or email info@crsgroup.co.za.
- Assessment and quote. We tell you whether stitching is the right repair, whether it should be done on site or in our Mayville workshop, and give you a price and a realistic date.
- Repair in position. Our team stitches the crack on site, with no heat going into the casting.
- Machining if needed. Where bores or faces need restoring afterwards, we advise on the options and handle workshop machining in-house.
Why CRS Group
- Local, not flown in. International stitching contractors bill travel, accommodation and standby time before work starts. We are based in Durban.
- Since 1977. Nearly five decades repairing castings for mining, sugar, marine, manufacturing and power generation.
- An honest recommendation. We also run a specialised welding division, so if welding or replacement is the better answer, we will tell you.
- Specialist divisions under one roof. Metal stitching, specialised welding and machining — if the repair needs machining afterwards, it stays with one company.
Common questions
Do you travel outside KwaZulu-Natal?
Yes. We are based in Durban and take on-site work at mines and plants across South Africa. We confirm travel and timing when we quote.
Does the machine have to be stripped down?
Usually not. Repairing in position is the main reason to choose on-site stitching. Where transport is practical, workshop repair can be quicker and cheaper — we will tell you which suits your job.
What do you need from us to quote?
Photos of the crack and the area around it, rough dimensions, the material if known, and the site location. On larger jobs we may ask for a site visit.
How much does it cost?
Every job is quoted individually. Price depends on crack length, section thickness, access and travel. A stitched repair is usually far cheaper than replacing a large casting — and than the downtime while a new one is made or imported.
