Shop around for engine work and you’ll hear three words used as if they mean the same thing: reconditioned, remanufactured and overhauled. They don’t — and the gap between them is exactly where people get burned.
Two quotes can differ by thousands of rands and both say “engine overhaul.” One includes machining, crack testing and new components throughout. The other is rings, bearings and a wash. Until you know what the words mean — and more importantly, what questions to ask — you can’t compare quotes at all.
Here’s the plain-language version we give our own customers.
Reconditioned: restored to spec, based on measurement
A reconditioned engine (or component) has been stripped, chemically cleaned, measured against factory specification, and then machined and rebuilt to bring it back within those limits:
- Bores measured — then honed, rebored or resleeved as the measurements dictate
- Crankshaft crack tested and ground if worn
- Cylinder head pressure tested, skimmed, valves and guides done
- Conrods checked and resized
- New wear parts — pistons or rings, bearings, gaskets, seals — as required
The key idea: the scope is driven by what the measurements show. If your bores are within limits, an honest reconditioner won’t charge you to machine them. That’s the strength of the approach — you pay for what your engine actually needs.
Remanufactured: rebuilt to a fixed standard, regardless of condition
A remanufactured engine is rebuilt to a predetermined specification — closer to a factory process. Typically everything is machined and all wear components are replaced whether they measured worn or not, and the engine is built to a documented standard.
Remanufacturing done properly is excellent — and it costs accordingly. The word gets abused, though: “remanufactured” on a advert is only worth as much as the documented process behind it. Which brings us to the third word.
Overhauled: the word that can mean anything
Overhaul is the loosest term of the three. Depending on who’s saying it, an “overhaul” can be:
- a full, measured reconditioning with machining throughout — or
- new rings and bearings dropped into unmeasured, worn bores, with a coat of engine enamel to finish
The second version is how you buy the same failure twice. New rings cannot seal against a worn, oval bore; new bearings will not survive on a worn crank journal. It runs fine for a few months — just long enough — and then the smoke and the knock come back.
Never buy the word. Buy the itemised scope: what was measured, what the measurements showed, what was machined, and what was replaced. A reputable shop will happily put all of it in writing — and if a quote seems too cheap, the scope is where the money went missing.

The seven questions to ask any engine shop
- What will you measure, and against what specification? (bores, crank journals, head and deck flatness, main tunnel)
- Will the crankshaft be crack tested? — non-negotiable before any grind
- Will the head be pressure tested? — especially after overheating
- Which machining operations are included — and which are “extra if needed”?
- Which parts are replaced as standard, and which brands?
- What happens if you find more damage once it’s stripped? — you want a phone call and a revised quote, not a surprise invoice
- What warranty applies, in writing?
Any established shop can answer these in five minutes. If the answers are vague, the quote is too.
